About Lindsay

Mākara, Aotearoa New Zealand

My name is Lindsay Bindman (she/her). I'm a 29-year-old Canadian, living in Aotearoa New Zealand since May 2018. I grew up just west of Toronto, playing competitive hockey and spending summers sailing. Kensington Market will always have my heart, no matter where I am in the world.

I graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in the spring of 2016 with a major in Communication Studies and minors in English and Film. After finishing my final exams, I flew down to the U.S. Virgin Islands to help my dad sail the Caribbean chain.

I am grateful to have assisted with both the circumnavigation of the world on our sailboat, as well as the documentary film we are making about the experience. While many of my dad’s peers in Toronto raised their eyebrow at his decision to live on a boat, my time interviewing locals in each new country expanded my understanding of the privilege required to embark on a long-term journey like this one. To most Torontonians, living off $2,500/month for food, fuel, anchorage, and everything in between is a tight budget. But for the majority of the world, my dad represents an unfathomable level of wealth - to be retired and traveling the world by boat.

Dropping the anchor and rowing ashore to learn about the local community, their values, language, culture, and cuisine has been an immense privilege.

In addition to sailing and traveling, I spent my early twenties developing my career in downtown Toronto. First, as the Outreach Coordinator for an academic support centre, and then as the Director of Service and Outreach for a niche, adult-focused communication clinic, which employed a team of speech-language pathologists.

After moving to New Zealand, I spent five years working in the public sector in Wellington, advocating for genuine Treaty partnership and co-design of our policies and legislation. It’s imperative that we build better systems that are inclusive of all identities, not only those who are white and wealthy.

Every year I have the privilege of living on this beautiful planet, I will continue to learn from those who have lived longer than I have, center the perspectives of people who look and identify differently than I do, and always speak up for what is right. Every year, learning, unlearning and levelling up. I am driven by human connection, so naturally love to explore new places and meet new people.
